Live 8: Why Celebrities Don't Run the World

According to Technorati, this phenomenon they call Live 8 is all over the blogosphere. I guess I'll add my two cents on the "long walk to justice."

Essentially, Live 8 is a campaign of concerts and such that seeks to influence international leaders at the G8 Summit. Their cause? Organizer Bob Geldorf puts it this way:
Every single day, 30,000 children die, needlessly, of extreme poverty.
On July 6th, we finally have the opportunity to stop that shameful statistic.
8 world leaders, gathered in Scotland for the G8 summit, will be presented with a workable plan to double aid, drop the debt and make the trade laws fair. If these 8 men agree, then we will become the generation that made poverty history.

That's nice. This is one of those "smile and nod" moments. Let's all just give Bobby a benevolent pat on the head, and quietly walk in the other direction.

Honestly, I find it hard to see where he's coming from. He tries to make it clear to us that "LIVE 8 is about justice not charity," but I'm just not feelin' it. Dictators and Jihadist Muslims have ruined many countries, so our money is supposed to fix that?

Let me show you something, Mr. Geldorf: Pretend there is an African country called X. X is a fairly prosperous country, with plenty of promise. Unfortunately, a totalitarian leader named Jimmy comes to power in X. Jimmy ruins the nation's thriving economy and plunges the nation into poverty. Now the citizens of X are needlessly dying of extreme poverty.

Now, it's very honorable to try to find a solution for X's woes, but we need to be careful of what solution we propose. For example, cancelling X's national debt and throwing more money at X will do very little to combat poverty. Yes, money is good, but if you don't address the cause of X's poverty, then you have done nothing to help the nation, because the money will have little effect.

No Mr. Geldorf, lack of money is not the ultimate cause of X's poverty. X's dictator Jimmy has decimated the country's economy and squandered the nation's money, and THAT is the cause of their poverty. If you give them more money, Jimmy will squander it. If you eliminate X's debt, Jimmy will run up an even higher debt. Until Jimmy the money pit is dealt with, money from even the world's richest countries cannot improve the living conditions of X's citizens.

Now, multiply X's story by oh, say, fifteen. Mr. Geldorf, meet Africa. You say many times that Live 8 is about bringing justice to Africa, but how is it just to eliminate the debts of tyrants? Do you really believe that enabling dictators to continue driving African nations into the ground qualifies as justice?

I hope Bob Geldorf is just short-sighted; I'd rather think he's a total moron than think he supports the genocidal autocrats of the world. Regardless, I think it's quite obvious why he's a performer rather than a government official.

I'm so glad you wrote this also! It just sums everything up into one simple package! It shows that world poverty is completely dependent on one factor!

CHARITY IS A COMMUNIST ACTIVITY!

Remember, kids, if you see anyone up to any sort of Communist activity, make sure to report them to your local Homeland Security office.

U2 and Paul McCartney doing "Sgt. Pepper's" was the best part of all that I saw. And I don't even like U2.

Yawn! I'm still getting over Live8! The artists who performed on the Parkway in Philly were spectacular. If Bob wants to organize more free concerts, sign me up!

Just don't sign me up to the BS he is trying to shovel.

Apparently, those poor starving artists were begging you to part with your hard earned cash to support their favorite cause:

THEMSELVES

It seem record sales of these artistes have soared since Live8

How many starving African kids will be clothed and fed on the proceeds of those sales?

Zero, Zip, Zilch!

Besides poverty cannot be erased simply because who then will fill the membership rolls of the communist community?

Actually, Bono, and i'm assuming other, are very big on charity work. May not be kids in Africa, but someone's being fed other than him.

Frankly, I can't understand why we even worry about African nations. It's pretty obvious the leaders of those nations do not concern themselves with their own people.Nigeria, for instance. We pour aid money into that country and none of it ever gets to the poor people who need it. And while we are supporting the dictator of that nation, he charges us 60 bucks a barrel for oil. Where is that money going? I believe all this concern for the starving people of Africa is total hypocrisy! The people who put on 'relief' shows have never had a relative who starved to death. And it's not their money that goes to Africa.

I know; let's help Ireland next. I heard they're out of potatoes!

You don't have to have a relative who has starved to death to want to help. Regardless of whether or not they are helping this problem, AT LEAST THEY'RE TRYING.

At Thu Jul 07, 02:31:00 PM, Blogger jacob.thrasher said...

Yes, at least they're trying. Nevermind the fact that they're not helping a single starving person, and they're really just fueling more oppression, it's the thought that counts, right?

CHARITY IS A COMMUNIST ACTIVITY!

Pretty close theloneamigo. There's just one word you left out:

GOVERNMENT CHARITY IS A COMMUNIST ACTIVITY!

Yes, this includes welfare. All those trade laws? There shouldn't be any trade laws. The responsibility of the government is to stop crime, not to "foster prosperity"!!!

See my article on this subject here.

I know that welfare has helped a lot of people. In fact, my own family was helped by welfare. But it is not the responsibility of the Feds to stop poverty! That is the responsibility of the family and then the church. Whenever the government gets involved in "charity", it ultimately fosters laziness and poverty on both a national level and a private level, the very things it was trying to stop.

Keep your legislation out of my wallet, Washington!

To Allison:
Just went to your blog. You and your friend seem to be very nice young ladies living in a really nice world where there are no bad people intent on doing bad things. I wish the whole world were like that, but it isn't. I was going to post this comment on your blog, but you don't allow anonymous comments, and I'm not a blogger, so I'm putting it here, because I think you'll see it (apologies to Neo for going off-thread....I totally agree with your stance on the Celebrity LoveMe fests).

Allison

Please be careful to give no clues about your whereabouts or identity. Whether you believe it or not, there are lots of predators online who look for sites just like your to find their next victims. One of the first things they look for is "background info" in the pictures......things you don't think about as you snap the pictures of yourself. You've already given out the facts that you live in Atlanta, you go to a private school, and your dad recently went through treatments for cancer. You also divulged the names of some of your friends. You are only a slip up or two away from giving enough info to allow some whacko to find you. They find it to be a fascinating game to play, looking for clues and stringing them together to find people.
Please accept this advice in the spirit in which it is offered. One of concern.

Why don't these celebrities give them the money, instead of making me, someone who is not rich, buy a ticket and then donate a portion of that ticket price. They could give a portion of their wealth to someone like The Red Cross, fair trade causes or even a Condom manufacturer or something that will benefit these people.

The main problem with most foreign aid is that you divert money from poor people in rich countries and give it to rich people in poor countries. It's like robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Now, the impoverished nations you are referring to are not Muslim Dictatorships. With the exception of maybe Afghanistan, most of the worlds poverty is in Sub Saharan Africa, Central and northern South America, and South East Asia. And for the most part when they are talking about debt relief and aid they are talking about Sub-Saharan Africa which is still trying to figure out their post-colonial potential in the world.

I for one am against any aid to any foreign country, especially to rich countries such as Israel who don't need it, yet continue to be the biggest recipient of US aid. So should starving AIDS babies in Africa get precedent over rich Israelis who throw poor Palestinians off their land? Yes, but I would prefer to see my aid money spent on the hungry people of this country first and then aid should only be given to other countries in the form of food, infrastructure and humanitarian organizations, but never direct cash deposits to a country.

Look what happened with Pat Robertson’s diamond buddy Mubotu of Zaire (DRC); setting on this resource rich country his people starved to death while he became one of the richest people in the world. Come to think of it, why doesn’t Pat Robertson help flip the bill? After all he has profited enormously off the slave labor in his diamond mines.

One more thing: How do celebrities not run the world? Bush is fairly well known, as are the majority of the world's other leaders.

The only difference is that celebrities are usually people who live and breathe for publicity and fame. Most leaders around the world do not have that goal in mind.

Haha, you go N@te...let's hope celebrities don't ever run the world. Kanye West is probably not the only celebrity who thinks that AIDS is a disease that the whites created to ravage Africa's people...what a joke.

I know about that welfare thing. I must agree with your statement, David S. Macmillan III, Government Charity is a dangerous thing. A single mother with three kids under 6 and another one on the way probably needs welfare, but a family with a healthy (but should I say lazy?) father and an intelligent mother who are simply under $30,000 annual income...? Giving them money, food, government housing...Doesn't that just reinforce the 'lets be lazy and let the government pay all our debts' attitude--and THAT'S DANGEROUS! ... And you wonder why in the world the government is racking up a deficit ... (no, clive, it ain't because of Bush...start thinking...) !!

Good job Neo, just what I wanted to say...as always. :-D Keep up the good work!
