More Facts About Terri Schiavo

I've been looking around for a little more information about Terri Schiavo, and I've found some interesting stuff.

In 1992, the jury in a medical malpractice suit against one of Terri's physicians awarded Michael Schiavo and Terri over one million dollars. After attorney's fees and other expenses, Michael's money from the suit totaled 300,000 dollars. Of the award, about 750,000 dollars of it was put in a trust fund specifically for Terri's medical care. Since the jury's decision, Michael has not spent the 750,000 dollars on treatment for Terri. How convenient, considering that should Terri die, Michael, as her legal guardian, would inherit this money.

During the malpractice trial where the jury awarded this money, Michael and his attorneys claimed that Terri WOULD NOT want to die in this situation. Michael also claimed he would take care of Terri and help her get better, something he has made no effort to do since the trial. He may have even claimed that Terri wanted therapy in her condition, but regardless of whether or not he said that, the fact is that he has refused to do what he said he would in the trial.

Michael is also reported to have said this on national television:

We didn’t know what Terri wanted but this (the feeding tube removal) is what we want…

That means he can now be tried for perjury. Let's get the ball rollin', people!

Terri had no living will when her heart stopped. Therefore, there is no evidence as to her wishes that would be admissible in court. The decision to remove her feeding tube was made based on what Michael reported that Terri had said. However, that is hearsay, and is inadmissible in court under most circumstances. Furthermore, Michael clearly has a stake in whether or not she dies (if she dies, he gets the money), so his testimony was unreliable.

Michael has tried to kill Terri in more than one way. In 1994, he attempted to deny her treatment for an infection. As I understand it, it was at this time that the Schindlers sought to have Michael removed as her guardian, citing abuse and other allegations.

Obviously, Michael is in this for the money. He has denied Terri the rehab that she was awarded money to pay for, he has denied her treatment for an infection, and he has not even allowed Terri's parents to see her. Furthermore, he has lied under oath. The man is a lying, cheating scumbag, and no matter what happens to Terri, he should be charged with neglect, abuse, and perjury, among other things.

Based on these facts and others, Terri's feeding tube should be put back in, and Michael should be replaced as her guardian and taken to court. It's time for this injustice to stop.

Thing I don't get is, if he is in it for the money, why didn't he take the $1 million, then $10 million dollars offered to him last week?

I will reiterate the fact that I am on the fence on this issue, but I don't think that Micheal Schavio should be demonized. You don't know enough about it to pass judgement on him. Neither do I. Let the courts decide.

TheLoneAmigo--How can you be on the fence on an issue like this? This is a conflict of interest for Michael and there has been no proof at all of Terrie wanting to die, save the testimony of her husband. Why, in a case like this, gravitate towards death?? Should a court decide the fate of a human being? Whatever happened to the right to live??

He couldn't exactly take the money after he'd been accused of being in it for the money.

If I wanted to get everybody mad, Rumpel, I would have said that I agreed with Micheal Schavio.

That being said, GIVEN NO ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, I say that if her parents want her to be kept alive, she should be kept alive. I do not think that Micheal Schavio is a criminal for thinking otherwise, but he may be wrong.

Might I just say that I am a conservative teen as well, and it is hard to find teens that feel the same way I do. It gives me comfort though, that even though I don't know you that you have the same views as I. Thanks so much for giving me just a little more hope for America's next leading generation. May the Lord himself help us all, for we're going to need it!!!

Dean,

I'm just wondering, how much would the life insurance money would he get from Terri? Also, if he gave custody of her to someone else, and she recovered, Michael would be in trouble, because he wouldn't allow her treatment, which would help her recover. Furthermore, she could speak for herself if she recovered, and she could very well say that she DIDN'T want to die, despite what Michael said. I think that he couldn't take the $1 million because if she recovered, it would look very bad for him.

Anonymous Conservative Teen,

I feel the exact same way; each new conservative teen I meet gives me more hope for the future. Thanks for commenting!

He isn't trying to be an idiot. I have experience with being with vegetative people. My grandma was this way for months. It isn't fun, at all. Yo uhave to deal with their "death" over and over everday. I respect Mr. Schiavos want to just continue with his life because I know I felt the same way. He isn't in it for the money either. I saw an interveiw and he is pledging to give all the money donated and the money from life insurance to charity.

He's already gone on with his life, Laura. That's why he had two kids with some other lady. He is free to divorce Terri and give custody of her to her parents, but he's not willing to do that. He'd rather her die.

That's great if he donates the money. Maybe he will, heaven knows he doesn't deserve it. If Terri dies, the blood will be entirely on his hands. He has denied her treatment since 1994 or even earlier, and has been trying to have her killed since that time. She could, by the diagnoses of doctors at the time, have recovered if she had been treated.

Michael is free to move on with his life, I wouldn't disagree with that so much. My problem is when he tries to kill her, in a way that is inhumane, when evidence shows she shouldn't be killed anyway, and the motive is selfish on top of all that.

I can respect someone's right to move on. I will never respect someone's right to starve someone else. Didn't Hitler do that? He starved and murdered those he considered inferior, including the mentally impaired?

So much for *conservatives* being fascists.

750,000 out of 300,000? Say what you want about Micheal, he knows how to get the most out of 300,000.

Or did you mean 750,000 out of the "more than one million?" Let's see... 750,000 for Terri's trust, 300,000 for Michael... That's more than a million already. Sounds like he got a really cheap lawyer.

Or is it a lot more than one million? Do you even know? Did you even check?

"Michael is also reported to have said this on national television?" By whom? When?

Weak.

Glad to see you're having fun, Tom.

$300,000 was given to Michael, and $750,000 was put into a trust fund for Terri. These came from the same malpractice suit.

I wouldn't know about Michael's lawyer. Do you know? Do you care, or are you just trying to find something to disprove?

WorldNetDaily reports that the total money from the malpractice suit was $1.3 million, and it claims that $700,000 went to Terri's trust fund and $600,000 went to Michael. Interpret these facts as you will.

On March 18, 2005, on the Larry King show, we can find the following exchange:

KING: Have you had any contact with the family today? This is a sad day all the way around, Michael. We know of your dispute.

M.SCHIAVO: I’ve had no contact with them.

KING: No contact at all?

M.SCHIAVO: No.

KING: Do you understand how they feel?

M.SCHIAVO: Yes, I do. But this is not about them, it’s about Terri. And I’ve also said that in court. We didn’t know what Terri wanted but this is what we want…

Here's the transcript:

Fuller excerpt:

KING: Michael, what do you expect to happen? Congress is in recess now, they have to come back into special session. The Supreme Court could put a stay on it. What do you think is going to happen?

M. SCHIAVO: I don't think the Supreme Court is going to put a stay on it. And I hope and implore that everybody call their legislators. They have to stay out of people's personal lives. There's no place for government. Call them and tell them.

KING: Have you had any contact with the family today? This is a sad day all the way around, Michael. We know of your dispute.

M. SCHIAVO: I've had no contact with them.

KING: No contact at all?

M. SCHIAVO: No.

KING: Do you understand how they feel?

M. SCHIAVO: Yes, I do. But this is not about them, it's about Terri. And I've also said that in court. We didn't know what Terri wanted, but this is what we want...

KING: You're not -- it didn't cost you anything. This is not something where you're looking to save money?

What's the "this?" that Michael says "we" want? I can't find it and neither can you, because Larry interrupted him.

And don't use World Net Daily as a source if you want to convince anyone.

Aside from all that, I think it's cool that a teen-ager has an issues blog. Good job.

Thanks, Tom. :)

As for WorldNetDaily, it was convenient (as in, it came up early on Google). You can search for the exact dollar amounts if you want, but you're likely to find differing amounts. I used a more conservative estimate in my post.

As for the "this," it IS somewhat ambiguous. However, my point is that he admitted to not knowing what Terri wanted, at least in reference to "this." It certainly looks incriminating, but do you have any other theories on what Michael was referring to? Certainly, this quote is at best ambiguous, but it doesn't look good for Michael either.

I am curious..do you know how much medical treatment cost? My mother was in the hospital for one week and it cost $12,000. Her condition wasn't serious either. So multiple that for 15 yrs. That's $9,360,000.

I am involved in a legal dispute right now and it's cost me $6,000 in the past 5 months...again multiple that by 10 years...

I find it hard to believe he has a penny left. Think before you type such underhanded posts.
